I’ve spent countless hours, including much of my childhood, exploring antique malls and digging through thrift stores. Shopping secondhand for your home provides a myriad of benefits—chiefly, it’s the best way to create a unique and personalized space. Not only that, but it is often more cost effective. Especially when shopping at the thrift store, the price of homewares is significantly less than buying new. And, perhaps most importantly, it is better for the planet. I won’t lay it on too thick, but our overconsumption of goods is slowly choking our planet to death. So we should probably stop doing that.
New doesn't mean better.
Perfection isn’t the goal
Listen, I love Pinterest as much as the next gal, but boy does it tend to show some unrealistic standards for how your home should look. I love to be inspired by the images I find online, but I also take it all with a grain of salt, and try not to let the comparison bug creep in. At Patchwork, we find solutions that are aimed at improving your life AND creating the beautiful home you desire, in that order. You won’t hear me give any one-size-fits-all advice when it comes to organization or design, because I am only interested in what works for YOU, not what the internet deems as perfection.
How the *bleep* did I end up doing this anyway? It’s a fair question, and mine has been a circuitous journey to entrepreneurship.
In my 30-odd years on this planet, I’ve moved across the country, had dreams of performing on Broadway, made a hard pivot into practicality and a law career, suffered major burnout, experienced the sudden and devastating loss of a parent, moved across the country AGAIN, made yet another pivot to a creative career, annnnnd here we are! I started Patchwork Organizing to bring thoughtful organization and accessible interior design to homes across Milwaukee and beyond.
Following my instincts has led me to make some pretty great decisions, albeit big and often terrifying, including leaving my paralegal job of 5 years without a clue of what was next. All I knew was that I was burned out and depressed, and I had to make a change. Within a few days of leaving the job, I happened upon a position assisting a professional organizer & household manager. I took the job on a whim, in the spirit of trying something new. I quickly fell in love with the work. It tapped into skills that I knew I had, but hadn’t considered turning into a career.
I’ve found that one positive move can be a steppingstone towards a better future, and leaving my job was the move I needed to broaden my horizons and take the next big leap. My husband and I had been having many discussions about moving, and a trip to visit my cousin in Milwaukee sparked an idea that soon became reality. Picking up our lives and moving from Atlanta to Milwaukee seemed like a crazy proposition at the time, but now we both view it as the best decision we ever made.
Amidst all the forward movement and exciting plans, I suffered the greatest loss of my life so far. On a banner blue-sky day in April 2022, my dad died suddenly of a heart attack while out on a jog. It still sometimes knocks the wind out of me to think about. Grief is my constant companion. Some days it weighs me down and others it walks alongside me like a dear friend. This loss instilled a sense of urgency in me, and I’ve channeled that into the push to build my dream life.
By forging my own path and being true to myself, I can offer something that is getting rarer and rarer these days—*authenticity*. My commitment to my clients and community, is to provide my expertise and skills without a lick of judgement. That’s right, you come as you are I will do the same.
It is my calling to help, to create, and have fun. So, I’ve built a business where I can do all three of those things with every project.
Part of what I bring to the table is my *journey.* The places I’ve lived, people I’ve known, experiences (both good and bad) that I’ve had, the countless hours spent in thrift and antique stores—it all informs who I am today. Treating others with kindness and respect is at the core of all that I do. That, and having a good time. If there is one thing that I love to do, it is to laugh. I do so loudly and often. Join me?
